~ Get estimates, payment terms, permit handling, how problems will be handled in writing
~ Voice your  concerns or questions
~ Bargain with the owner not the laborer
~ See if you can get a discount for working around their schedule
~ See if your preferred contractor will match a price
~ Do not pay for an estimate
~ Be sure to get a published phone number, a cell phone number, a mailing address, and an email address
